Wine to Water Philippines

Wine to Water Philippines

About This Campaign

Imagine waking up before the sun rises to hike down a steep, muddy mountain for 1 hour to gather water for your family from a tiny stream coming from a rusty pipe. In Sitio Timago Langub and other rural areas outside of Davao City, Philippines, this is what local must go through in order to get drinking water that is contaminated with bacteria and debris.

Wine to Water is partnering with Clean Water Philippines to maximize the efforts to bring clean water to people across the great nation of the Philippines. With the funds that are raised, bio-sand filters will be installed in schools and communities to filter the water and make it drinkable. There is so much wealth in the world and even throughout the Philippines, but in order to bring an end to the consumption of unclean water is starts with just you... giving whatever you can spare to make a difference.

Together, let's end the water sanitation crisis in the Philippines.
#WinetoWaterPH is more than just a fundraising initiative. It is a movement led by those who believe that everyone deserves clean drinking water. The campaigning will continue until every Filipino has access to safe and hygienic water sources.

Campaign to Support Wine To Water

We're a small team based in Boone, NC, who believes ordinary people, in community, can make an extraordinary difference in the world.  This movement began in 2004 when our founder, Doc Hendley, while bartending in Raleigh, NC, learned about the world’s water crisis.  Once captured by the cause, Doc felt the need to do something about it.  So, he did. He did what he knew best…pour some wine, beer, and spirits, play some music, and have a great time with friends. When it was all said and done, a few thousand dollars was raised due to the generosity of the community.  With some money in hand, Doc soon found himself in Darfur, in the midst of a war, working to provide clean water to those who were in desperate need in desperate times.  Thus, Wine To Water was born.

A Journey to Davao with Wine to Water

In September 2015, entrepreneur and Wine to Water spokesperson Christian Mark Jacobs, renowned Filipino fashion designer Francis Libiran, & leading photographer Niccolo Cosme journeyed to Davao City, Philippines to scope out project sites and meet the people of Davao who were living without access to clean water.

From bacteria-contaminated water sources to bare-footed children playing in garbage to dilapidated shacks on hilltops, it became evident that many people living in the remote villages on the outskirts of Davao were desperately in need of help. The lack of access to education, health care, and clean water is the harsh reality of those living in these impoverished neighborhoods, yet upon greeting them their faces are painted with smiles and a warm sense of hospitality.

"This is the worst poverty I have ever witnessed first-hand in the Philippines, and I want to put a stop to this injustice. Everyone should have access to clean drinking water," said fashion designer Francis Libiran during an interview. Francis hiked with Christian Mark Jacobs for 1 hour to a contaminated water source in Sitio Timago Langub (pictured above) to experience in full-force what daily life was like for the locals.

Francis' business partner, President and CEO of Advocate Fashion, Inc., Arsi Baltazar, expressed excitement about the project during a recent think-tank discussion saying, "This is a great cause and we will do our part to ensure that we give generously to help the people in Davao. There are many individuals and businesses throughout the Philippines that can donate the resources needed to meet this need and we want to help."

The sense of connection felt when shaking an elderly man's hand or hugging a child with hydrocephalus or down syndrome who is wearing rags, leaves a residual effect on outside visitors who make the long trek to these villages. The fact that so many people in Manila, and even in the Davao City center, wake up every day and turn on the faucet or open up the refrigerator to take a sip of clean, refreshing water is something that is taken for granted. It's easy to lose sight of how privileged those are who do not have to struggle for basic needs such as clean water.

Wine to Water spokesperson, Christian Mark Jacobs said, "With any privileged position in life also comes great responsibility. People who have all their basic needs taken care and have a little extra to spare are privileged, although they may not even realize it. I was always taught that stewardship is an integral part of valuing what you have been entrusted with. I have more than I need, and now that I have met people suffering and even dying from water contamination, it's my responsibility to have compassion on them and help improve their quality of life."

#WinetoWaterPH is more than just a fundraising initiative. It is a movement led by those who believe that everyone deserves clean drinking water. The campaigning will continue until every Filipino has access to safe and hygienic water sources. The diagram below shows just how we will do that, using bio-sand filters.
