Women Build Fundraising 2016

Women Build Fundraising 2016

About This Campaign

Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity Women Build is an event in which women volunteer teams and sponsors join together to raise funds and build a home for a family in our community who is in need of simple, decent, affordable housing. Each volunteer team works together to reach their fund raising goal and then participates in one day of building.

The funds raised during Women Build sponsor the materials needed for the home. Women Build brings together hundreds of volunteers and donors to build a home for a hard-working family in the Fort Wayne community.

Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity

Campaign to Support Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity

Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry uniting volunteers and local investors with qualified families to build simple, affordable homes in Allen County. Established locally in 1986, Habitat completed its first home in 1987 and has since built more than 180 safe, stable and sustainable homes for families in need. Habitat seeks to promote dignity and hope to families served in order to meet needs in a sustainable and transformational way. Every family who partners with Habitat must complete 300 hours of sweat equity, working on the construction site and at the Habitat ReStore, and successfully pass HomeWorks home buyer education and financial literacy classes. Future homeowners also make a $500 down payment and will repay an interest-free 30-year mortgage back to Habitat. Thanks in part to partner family sweat equity and volunteer labor, the cost of a standard three-bedroom home is kept affordable, with typical monthly mortgage payments around $500 including taxes and insurance. The revolving fund created by mortgage payments received allows Habitat to reinvest into the community through additional housing opportunities, creating a lasting and sustainable investment for years to come.

MEET  THE  HOMEOWNER:

When Megan Ehinger moved into her one-bedroom apartment in South Bridge eight years ago she determined she was not going to move again until she had a house.
This spring she will finally be able to build that home alongside hundreds of other ladies who will come together for Women Build. Megan has worked hard to get to this point, and she’s looking forward to this last leg in her effort to become a homeowner.
Megan was accepted to Habitat’s homeownership program in late 2013 after hearing about it from her mom, who encouraged her to apply. She said that while her apartment is not a bad place to live, it’s not as easy living on the third floor and having no space to roam now that her son Braxton is an active three-year-old.
“I am definitely looking forward to him having his own bedroom and a yard,” Megan said. “Having our own space – both of us – will be great.”
She said Braxton talks all the time about their new home and what it will be like to have a yard and a playground nearby. He’s also already asking for a dog to join the family with their newfound space. Megan said she’s looking forward to knowing her hard-earned money is going into something that will last – not just the monthly rent.
Megan is excited to be partnering with local ladies on the Women Build this spring. She’ll be earning her final 25 hours of sweat equity with them working on her home.
And there is a message she wants women who might be reluctant to join her on the build site to hear: “It’s fun and empowering being able to do something most people think only a man can do,” she said. “And you can do it just as good as them!
