Winter is Coming!

Winter is Coming!

About This Campaign

Winter is Coming! And everyone needs a roof over their head. For those who caught on to that Game of Thrones reference, we’re NOT raising money to help fight the white-walkers. This campaign is to raise the remaining funds needed to build a shelter for at risk-youth in Saint John, NB. No one should be without shelter when the Canadian winter hits, and we’re getting close to being able to provide it to youth in-need, youth who are currently without options. But, before we can put a shovel in the ground, we need your HELP! THIS CAMPAIGN IS A CALL TO ACTION: We have had huge support from the faith community and from local foundations, but we've still got a way to go. The City of Saint John has a population of about 70,000 people (the regional Census Metropolitan Area is about 128,900). If everyone in Saint John gave $2.43, we would have what we need on the operational funding side of things to get the ball rolling. If 8,500 people gave $20, or if 3,400 people gave $50, we could meet that target. THIS is where YOU come in! Here are 3 ways YOU can make an impact: 1. Can you help raise $1000? Sign up to help us crowdfund by clicking “PARTICIPATE” and create your own mini-page, set a desired crowdfunding goal and get your friends, family, and networks involved in this important project! 2. Support the campaign and the cause simply by clicking “DONATE”. 3. Share the link to this campaign on your social media and let your friends & family know! If we all work together, we can make this happen!
Safe Harbour Transitional Youth Services

Campaign to Support Safe Harbour Transitional Youth Services

Safe Harbour Transitional Youth Services (Safe Harbour), through collaboration with community partners and youth, will provide emergency and transitional housing to homeless and at-risk youth. Safe Harbour is a direct response to the crisis in youth homelessness in southern New Brunswick; there is currently NO emergency or transitional housing program for youth. As a result homeless youth are left on the streets, or in unsafe situations, while they try to get their lives on track. Homeless and at-risk youth need specific supports; adult shelters and services aren’t appropriate. The recently published book Youth Homelessness in Canada: Implications for Policy and Practice explains that: “...while many, if not most, adults who are homeless will have had some experience with independent living this is not the case for most homeless youth. Few leave home with knowledge of how to rent and maintain an apartment, find a job (especially one that isn’t a dead-end, minimum wage job), stay in school, buy and prepare food, pay bills and even arrange medical appointments. On top of all this, many if not most young people who become homeless are working through the challenges of adolescent development... We understand that for most young people this can be a slow and arduous process, lasting years. For those who become homeless, however, there is usually no time or the necessary supports in place to allow this development to occur in a safe and supported way…Our understanding of youth homelessness must necessarily be framed in terms of the challenges of adolescence and young adulthood.” Safe Harbour will get youth off the streets by provide an emergency housing program as part of a youth-serving continuum in collaboration with The Resource Center for Youth (TRC), which has case management and day-support programs, and The ONE LIFE program, which offers longer-term housing and education supports. For some youth, Safe Harbour will be the first point of entry into a long-term, service-delivery model that will give them the supports they need as they make the transition from adolescence to adulthood.

Hello friends! Well, I'm back at it again-running and training for Marathon by the Sea 1/2 Marathon, Aug 10th. And once again, I'm running in support of Safe Harbour and am hoping to have your support. A lot has been happening over the past year towards making this facility a reality to assist homeless youth in southern NB. You have only to drive by the site on Broad street to see the walls are up and all the activity on the site. Please support my fundraising goal of $500 and Help Safe harbour Cross the Finish Line! https://www.giveffect.org/campaigns/172
