Give the Gift of Home 2016
About This Campaign
The holidays are a time for friends and family to gather. Thanks to the generous donations we receive from people like you, 2016 will mark the first year that John and Mai and their five children will be able to invite people into their home to celebrate.
Why we do what we do
John and Mai applied to Habitat for Humanity La Crosse Area in 2015. Their loving family was growing, and they were anxiously awaiting the birth of their fifth child. As they watched their family grow, they knew they needed to find a bigger, safer home for their children. Their two-bedroom, drafty apartment was no longer working. But like many lower-income families in La Crosse, finding a place to call home was proving difficult.
Like John and Mai, about 55% of renters in the City of La Crosse experience ahousing cost burden; paying more than 30% of their gross monthly income on rent. Additionally, though they saved and maintained excellent credit, John and Mai’s income level made successful homeownership impossible. Until they found out about Habitat for Humanity . . .
How we make it happen...
For the past eight months, John and Mai have worked alongside hundreds of volunteers to build the place they will soon call home. Because Habitat believes in a hand up, not a hand out, John and Mai will contribute over 350 hours of sweat equity. Habitat also believes in the talents right here in our community. Strong communities are places where the capacities of local residents are identified, valued and used. This is why Habitat calls upon our community to engage in each home construction. Community participation not only helps a family in need, but it helps strengthen the community by developing relationships among local citizens, organizations, and businesses;allowing them to come together for a common cause.
How John and Mai’s story ends
Picture the moment when John and Mai and their five children move into their new home. See their new baby take his first steps across the living room floor. Smell the first meal they cook together in their new kitchen. Hear the sounds of laughter as their children put their toys in their new bedrooms. Touch the energy efficient windows that will be thrown open to let in the sweet smells of spring. Feel the security of having a safe and affordable place for their family to come home to. This is why we do what we do. This is why we need your support. Donations are what turn dreams into reality. In 2017 wew ill help four more families tell their stories. Won’t you help tell their stories with us?
Campaign to Support Habitat for Humanity La Crosse Area
Habitat for Humanity La Crosse Area is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry founded on the conviction that every family should have a decent, safe, and affordable place to live. We partner with low-income, hardworking families and the community to build simple, decent, and affordable housing. Established locally in 1992, Habitat La Crosse has built 42 safe, stable and sustainable homes for families in need. Every family who partners with Habitat must complete 350 hours of sweat equity, working on the construction site and at the Habitat ReStore, and successfully pass home buyer education and financial counseling. Homeowners repay an interest-free 30-yearmortgage back to Habitat. Thanks in part to partner family sweat equity and volunteer labor, the cost of a home is kept affordable, with typical monthly mortgage payments around $650 including taxes and insurance. The revolving fund created by mortgage payments received allows Habitat to reinvest into the community through additional housing opportunities, creating a lasting and sustainable investment for years to come.
