Lake Winnipeg is a cherished place for activities like fishing, paddle boarding and canoeing. But right now, the lake is in a precarious position due to pollution, toxic blooms of algae and invasive species. If these challenges aren’t addressed quickly, the future of the world’s tenth largest lake is in peril.
Governments and environmental organizations are coming together to tackle these issues, but right now a key piece is missing — the voices of local First Nations. First Nations have lived on this lake for millennia and continue to rely on it for their way of life. These voices are essential to saving the lake.
The Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources and the Lake Winnipeg Foundation are working together with the Brokenhead Ojibway Nation to help plan a Gathering for First Nations living on the Lake. This Gathering will allow First Nation leaders and lands managers to come together to voice their community’s concerns and identify areas to work together and with other organisations.
By donating today, you will be supporting First Nations around Lake Winnipeg to gather and strengthen their role in saving Lake Winnipeg. Your money will be used in the planning and delivery of the Gathering.
A strong First Nations voice benefits all of us who care about Lake Winnipeg. Thank you!
