Campaign to Support The Human League Association
The Human League Association was formed in 1996 by a group of local businessmen who were involved in local hockey clubs and associations. They all felt that there were two major issues that required immediate attention: kids were coming to early practices but couldn't get through the hour because of lack of energy, and there were kids in the bleachers and behind the boards who wanted to play, but whose families could not afford the costs associated with the game.
The Breakfast Club for Kids was formed. They started the program in one school. Today, there are 96 programs in Greater Sudbury. The P.L.A.Y. program was formally created in 2003, and has since helped over 4,000 local children by paying their registration fees, equipment costs, and/or transportation costs to and from their chosen activities.
The Human League receives no government funding. We relay 100% on private and corporate donations, and funds raised at special events throughout the year. There are over 300 volunteers who manage the Breakfast programs in each school. There are over 90 local companies that work with us to ensure that children can participate in their sporting programs, lessons and activities.
We are a staff of one; there is no fat to trim. In 2013, we took 412 kids off the sidelines, but had to leave 213 behind. We just didn't raise enough money to help them all. But we're determined not to let that happen again this year.
