Giving Tuesday 2017

Giving Tuesday 2017

About This Campaign

#GivingTuesday2017 is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities, and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide.

In 2016, the fifth year of Giving Tuesday, millions of people in 98 countries came together to give back and support the causes they believe in. Over $177 million was raised online to benefit a broad range of organizations.

The Child Rescue Centre provides real support to over 600 vulnerable children and youth in Sierra Leone by providing for their education, health care, and spiritual mentoring, helping to break the cycle of poverty in one of the poorest countries in the world through the Child Support Program, Family Care Program, Residential Program, and Promise Scholarship Program. Through the Microfinance program, some of the most vulnerable families are offered education on how to become self-sustaining and provide for their children's needs. They are taught how to budget, save, and create a small business plan, and graduates receive a small loan to launch their business and their progress is tracked by CRC staff.  The Family Strengthening Program provides opportunities for family members to participate in workshops, sporting events, devotions, and activities that strengthen the attachment of children to their caregivers, preparing them for life in the family and community.

Mercy Hospital's mission is to improve infant, child, and maternal health by providing holistic, community-focused care. It serves the second largest city in Sierra Leone with a trained and dedicated medical staff, laboratory, and a fully-stocked pharmacy, and provides inpatient and outpatient care to thousands each year regardless of their ability to pay. Mercy's community outreach program staff travel to 11 catchment centers in the surrounding communities of Bo to serve nearly 55 villages every month and provide free medical treatment to those who would otherwise not receive it. These services include nutrition clinics, prenatal care, malaria testing and treatment, and confidential HIV/AIDS testing and counseling. The Nutrition Program serves nearly 350 severely malnourished infants and children each month, providing them with a month's supply of Benemix, a nutrition supplement to help them gain weight. Mercy outreach staff test and treat malaria for over 400 men, women, and children each month and provide care to an average of 150 pregnant women each month.

#GivingTuesday is the opening day of the giving season: a reminder of the "reason for the season". Every act of generosity counts. This year,  we are aiming to raise $10,000 to support Helping Children Worldwide and our programs at the Child Rescue Centre and Mercy Hospital. We hope you consider Helping Children Worldwide as you choose your charities this giving season.

Mark your calendars, and make sure to follow our progress on November 28th!
