A Home in Home Place

About This Campaign

A Home for Sharifa

For Sharifa, being able to own her own home is the culmination of a very long process of finding safety for her children. This journey began over 18-20 years ago in Afghanistan, pregnant with twins and with four young children, made a difficult decision to escape war torn Afghanistan by walking through the mountains of Pakistan. Over the course of three years in difficult conditions she worked with Catholic Charities and the U.S. State Department to gain refugee status in the U.S. With the support of various refugee services in the Indianapolis area she was able to find housing, learn English, learn to drive, get a job at Walmart, buy a car and support her children. Sharifa's faith, courage and perseverance in the face of adversity have held her family together through this difficult journey. Providing for herself and her children on her small salary has been the greatest challenge but her success in this regard speaks to Sharifa's dedication, her selflessness and love for her children.

Sharifa learned about Habitat through her dear friend, Diane, who knew Sharifa's story and felt that she would be an ideal candidate for a Habitat home. The family has learned that something worth having is worth working hard for and that staying the course will pay off in the end. In order to meet Habitat's requirements for sweat equity and education and maintenance classes, she used her vacation and weekends over 2 years to meet the conditions. After this and with the help of good friends in the community, Sharifa worked diligently with Habitat to identify a location and building plan that would be suitable. The wait has certainly been worth it. The entire family is excited to see the home built and for Sharifa to take ownership.

The American Dream is becoming a reality for Sharifa and her faith and courage is being rewarded. Most importantly, she has been able to provide her children with a place that they can truly call home and feel good about coming home to.

Habitat for Humanity of Hamilton County

Campaign to Support Habitat for Humanity of Hamilton County

Habitat for Humanity of Hamilton County’s mission is to partner with low-income, hardworking families in Hamilton County under the conviction that every person and family deserves a simple, decent, and affordable place to live. Habitat homeowners pay interest-free, no-profit mortgages, which are used to build more Habitat houses. Because houses are principally built with volunteer labor, mortgage payments are affordable for low-income partners.
