About This Organization

Medicine River Wildlife Centre strives to connect people with their wild heritage through education, and with that understanding comes respect of our environment, wildlife and ourselves.

We are a wildlife hospital and education facility in central Alberta, Canada that has been in operation since 1984. We receive 1600 injured, orphaned and compromised wildlife annually, offer support to the public through 8000 phone calls every year, welcome visitors in the interpretive centre and offer a long list of educational opportunities and community services. We travel throughout much of Alberta to schools and community groups to present close to 150 formal education programs each year. The hospital welcomes up to 15 international volunteers each summer who live at the Centre, work as staff members and receive a wide range of educational experiences.

Reasons 14-18: Intensive Care Units. We urgently need the rebuild of our 5 intensive care units. Each unit is designated for similar species - songbirds, waterbirds, small raptors, large raptors and mammals. They will be equipped with high quality caging and floor drains for easy cleaning. These state-of-the-art units will not only be more efficient for staff usage, but a better place for our patients to recover.

Reason #13: Releases! This Meadowlark came in last November, extremely skinny. She did really well over the winter and gained her weight back beautifully. In April she started nest building in the songbird cage even though there wasn't a male Meadowlark around.

This spring, we took her out east and stopped at the first Meadowlark singing that we could find. We let her go and she flew over and landed on a fence near the singing male. He flew down and strutted his stuff in front of her then flew back up to a pole and sang and sang. Then the two of them flew around a bit together and he landed on the pole and sang again. As we were pulling away, two more Meadowlarks came in. Love at first sight!

Reason #12: Reuniting! We admitted a moose calf yesterday who had been running, lost and confused, on the edge of Calgary. After intensive treatment for shock, stress and exhaustion, we attempted a reunite with the mother who has been seen wandering in the area. A call of a moose calf in distress was played to lure the mother in. Unfortunately, she did not respond this evening, and was perhaps too far away to hear. Unless she is spotted this evening, we will try the process again in the morning.

These photos are from a local resident who saw mom with her calf one day, and mom alone the next.
