Community Recreational Initiatives Society

About This Organization

The Community Recreational Initiatives Society (CRIS) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide support to people with mental and physical disabilities by developing and implementing outdoor and wilderness recreation programs to promote independence, assist with integration and inclusion, reduce isolation and improve the well-being of these individuals. CRIS runs two unique programs – Adaptive Adventures and Adaptive Wilderness Adventures: • The Adaptive Adventures program runs trips 6 days/week and 2-3 times/day throughout the entire Okanagan Valley. These guided trips are adaptive kayaking, cycling or hiking. • The Adaptive Wilderness Adventures (AWA) program provides a more extreme experience for those participating on the trip. CRIS’s AWA program has lead multiday backcountry hiking, kayaking and cycling trips; caving, rock-climbing and parasailing adventures; as well as customized adventure experiences that participants have requested specifically. The AWA program prides itself on empowering people with impairments to break down perceived barriers that they are somehow limited and disabled by society in accessing of the great outdoors. CRIS helps breaks down these barriers!
