About This Organization
About Epilepsy Ontario:
Epilepsy Ontario is the provincial voice of Epilepsy. We are a registered charitable organization dedicated to promoting independence and optimal quality of life for children and adults living with seizure disorders. We do this by promoting information, awareness, support services, advocacy, education and research.
For many individuals and families dealing with Epilepsy, there can seem as if there is nowhere to turn for help. One of the ways that Epilepsy Ontario helps people in need is through our Epilepsy Information Specialist, Suzanne Nurse. People can reach out to her, no matter where they are. She is there at the end of a phone, ready to provide support, information, and guidance when needed, like in the case of Mary* and her 4-year-old daughter Lisa*. Like many 4-year-old's, Lisa was just starting school and beginning to make new friends, but Lisa and her parents had more to think about than getting ready for school each day. Lisa has Epilepsy and was experiencing seizures several times a day. Her teacher and the school principal were concerned about their ability to manage Lisa’s seizures.
Unfortunately, Lisa had a negative reaction to the first anti-seizure drug that was tried and her paediatrician took her off anti-convulsant medication all together. Lisa’s seizures continued, her parents were frightened and felt they had no control and could not help their daughter. Mary felt that they needed a second opinion, but was concerned about offending her doctor. They live in a rural area of Ontario and there were no other pediatricians within 100kms. Epilepsy Ontario’s Epilepsy Information Specialist provided epilepsy training for the school staff and helped Mary navigate the health care system by providing information and communication tools so she could request a referral to a paediatric epileptologist (neurologist who specializes in epilepsy). With the help of Epilepsy Ontario, Mary was able to connect with the help her daughter needed to get her seizures better under control and to successfully complete senior kindergarten.
