volunteer spotlight

Name: Belinda Holbrook

Current Volunteer Roles: Family Support Committee Chair, ReStore Cashier

How long have you volunteered with HFHQC?

I started in 1995 when I was asked to be a mentor for a Partner Family. I have continued on the Family Support committee since then. I have also served on the Family Selection committee and Habitat Board. I helped build one house from start to finish. I volunteer weekly at the Habitat ReStore and teach an occasional craft class there.

Why do you volunteer with HFHQC?

I love that we sell houses with a no interest loan so that low-income families can afford them. I admire the hard work that families do to earn sweat equity. It's important that volunteers work side-by-side with partner families and get to know each other. The ReStore diverts items from the landfill and in doing so raises money for Habitat.

What do you do when you are not volunteering with us?

I read, quilt, garden, and help with our church's food pantry.

Thank you Belinda for sharing your time and talents with us!

More Family Mentors are needed!

We are welcoming new partner families into the Habitat home ownership program in May! Family mentors are a key part of the Habitat program. You would be assigned to assist one Habitat partner family through the program as their liason and cheerleader. The time commitment is 1-2 family contacts per month and a monthly committee meeting. It generally takes 1-2 years for a family to complete the Habitat program.

If you are interested in learning more about this "behind the hammer" volunteer opportunity, contact family service/ volunteer coordinator Zach at zach@habitatqc.org

recycle, re-use, ReStore

ReStore would like to give a special shourtout to new volunteers Joanie Mercy, Angelique Drew, and Vallarie Fendley who are associated with Morning Star Academy. Joanie teaches Music and Latin at the school and wanted to be a part of the community building efforts that Habitat supports. Angelique is about to finish her Sophomore year at Morning Star, and was wanting to expand her skills both organizationally and artisticly through ReStore. Vallarie is preparing for the jump after high school, as she graduates from Morning Star in early May. She plans on attending a summer camp where they provide her with a glimpse of where different avenues in life can take her before exploring a gap year. Thank you for your great help!

what's in store

May is bringing not only beautiful flowers, but also Spring Cleaning at ReStore! We have started power washing the north side of the building in anticipation of a new paint job, just as soon as it warms up.
