A Message From Megan Jiron

I work with 11 grade students at South Valley Academy teaching life skills and college preparation. SVA has a 99% percent minority enrollment rate, 98% of who are considered economically disadvantaged. Many of my students are considered at-risk and come from single parent homes. But I know them to be big-hearted, humorous and filled with potential. With Big Brothers Big Sisters, I help pair my students with volunteer mentors from the larger Albuquerque community who work with them to encourage and reinforce the life skills learned in class.

Working with these students and volunteers has taught me so much and has enriched my life. The last two years, I taught life skills to students in a tiny community in the western highlands of Guatemala. Today I feel I’m working to improve the lives of youth but with more resources, support and more accessibility!

On April 1st, I will “Bowl for Kids’ Sake.” My goal is to raise $125 that will help out our program. Please consider donating a couple of bucks to support my team (or share my post with your friends)! Thank you for being awesome!

"Researchers found that after 18 months of spending time with their Bigs, the Little Brothers and Little Sisters, compared to those children not in our program, were:
46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
27% less likely to begin using alcohol
52% less likely to skip school
37% less likely to skip a class
33% less likely to hit someone
They also found that the Littles were more confident of their performance in schoolwork and getting along better with their families."
