A Message From Sam Latham

This year, I'm running the Chicago Marathon, and it absolutely terrifies me. As a marathoner, I'll literally be running for hours with others just as crazy. I'm stifling the thoughts about taping my nipples and generously applying talcom powder, and replacing them with others like: "You wanted this. You chose to do this. You've actually paid to be here."

But why? Why? To what end am I doing this?

Both my girls came from the South Suburban Humane Society, the south suburbs' largest managed-admission shelter.

Chrissy was your standard kitten who appears every spring, but she had a knack for slipping out of her cat tower overnight. River was picked up by the police - she was an energetic 4-week old bundle who was running loose with no tag, chip, collar, or lost-dog report.

Now they're a Punch and Judy show at my apartment (see Pictures). Chrissy feigns indifference, while River fawns over friends and visitors.

For the marathon, I'm aiming to raise $1000 for the South Suburban Humane Society, and I would love to have your help. This shelter finds homes for nearly 3000 pets every year, and supports tens of thousands through its vet clinics, adoptions, and medical services. I'm honestly grateful for anything you can spare.

For quick reference:
Your $25 donation will help a cat or kitten (even a nursing litter in the Spring) get the care and attention it needs before adoption.

Your $50 gift helps senior dogs, puppies, and every dog in between find the perfect match.

Your $100 donation can truly impact the lives of several homeless animals.

From rescuing puppies in the deep south, to breaking up puppy mills and unethical breeders, and helping low-income pet owners provide for their pets, your gifts can truly make a difference.

Year after year, I'm always amazed at what this group can do. The South Suburban Humane Society transformed from an open-admission shelter into a proactive managed-admission shelter which simultaneously raised adoptions, drastically reduced euthanasia, and even increased overall pet intake! They've opened the first-ever vet clinic catered to people and pets in need - those pet owners who might otherwise euthanize or give up their pet because they couldn't afford care.
