A Message From Leanne Hibbs
My dad was a Marine in the Vietnam War at the age of 20. For years after, he suffered flashbacks and post traumatic stress for all that he saw and had to do at war. As a kid I always wondered why he slept with a pillow over his head. My mother told me it's because rats would get into their tents in Vietnam and they would put pillows over their heads to keep the rats away from their faces. The depression got worse and my dad sought help from a psychiatrist and medication but it didn't take his pain away fast enough and he committed suicide shortly after I turned 10. I grew up without my dad and I still miss him so much. I am now a school counselor and over the years, have helped many children cope with the loss of a parent, some from suicide. I think stopsoldiersuicide.org is a wonderful organization and much needed. My school is having a 5k race for wellness 11/14 and I'd like to run it in memory of my dad and the wellness of all soldiers.
