A Message From Sonny Misa

“Why Gryffindor?” is a question I am often asked. What started as a simple nickname I earned in high school has now evolved into a way of life within UniCamp.

Have you ever thought about how Hermione seems to be more Ravenclaw, Harry Slytherin, or Ron Hufflepuff, and yet they were all sorted Gryffindor? Well a defining trait of Gryffindor is bravery, and something unique about it is that anyone can choose to be brave. They were Gryffindor because they valued courage and chose to symbolize it.

As I progressed through UniCamp, that meaning took root. I enjoyed my time at the Alpine Tower because I could encourage people to face their fears. I choose to embody Gryffindor by helping others find their bravery within. Last year I took that one step further and joined C.L.I.M.B. There I learned mindfulness under the tutelage of my amazing Program Directors, Ryu and Termie. This year, I took a huge leap forward to become Program Director for C.L.I.M.B. with an amazing co, Crazy Legs. Throughout this whole experience, we sought to inspire everyone to be mindful while finding their own Core Lessons.

This is the first year C.L.I.M.B. has done all seven sessions of UniCamp. This is more than double the amount of previous years, and with that, the financial burden substantially increases. Please help me encourage both campers and volunteers to be brave throughout this summer. Every donation helps this quest:

C.L.I.M.B. stands for Core Lessons in Mind and Body, see my previous event for what I believe symbolizes C.L.I.M.B. https://www.facebook.com/events/1404756996494371/

As always, let me leave you with some food for thought:

Many people believe that those who are courageous are never afraid - they fearlessly accomplish grandeur. I posit the opposite: the truly brave are the individuals who feel that unnerving fear, and yet they persevere. To feel fear means you personally understand that you are pushing your boundaries. The courageous learn to channel that fear to fuel their desire to reach their goals. In the end, they are brave because they are afraid.

Much Woodsey Love,
Sonny "Gryffindor" Misa

14th Annual UCLA UniCamp Camp-A-Thon!

About This Campaign

In the midst of our UCLA UniCamp Student Volunteer's nearly 100 hours of training, they somehow manage to find time to fundraise at least $500 each with fellow UCLA UniCamp Student Volunteers. Please join us in sponsoring these students. All proceeds from this event go towards sending under-served youth to camp this summer. The student’s goal this year is to raise $290,000. This will help UCLA UniCamp give over 1,300 campers a summer camping experience. Join us in this great cause. UCLA UniCamp is a tradition at UCLA that is entering its 80th summer of camp. Every year there are hundreds of underserved children that may not be dreaming of a bright future. Help us provide these kids with the tools to change their stars and give them the chance to dream big and succeed. Thank you in advance for your interest and your generosity!
