Hi guys ! You know I’m involved with Big Brothers/Big Sisters here in Helena. I’m all in – I’ve been a Big Brother for Isiah going on three years, and Cindy and I were a Big Couple for Andrew, a special needs kid, for a couple of years. And, I am on the local Board, and this year with our merger with Great Falls, I am now the Chair of the combined Helena/Great Falls BBBS Corporation. It’s a great program, and I’m loving seeing how much Isiah is growing and becoming more responsible – and as a result, a happier kid. We started out in the school program, and despite some concern about his attendance, he never missed school the days we were scheduled to hang out at his school during the lunch hour. Now, we’ve moved into the Community based program, where he and I hang out for a couple of hours each week or so. Yup – I’ve taught him how to build Adirondack chairs. He was curious so we’ve also built a dog food table (you know those things with dog food/water bowls a little above the floor so it’s easier on the dog’s neck) and a memorial cross for his grandfather who recently passed away. He’s gotten the idea that if you want to, you can probably build it, and its more fun that way, than buying it. He doesn’t know it, but he’s learning math at the same time (if you want the cross to be 40” tall, and the cross member should be 2/3 of the way up the base, how many inches from the bottom should it be ?) Now he wants to learn how to cook. So, Cindy gets to eat pretty well evert week we hang out. And, sometimes she gets to eat some, well, “interesting” food. And again, Isiah is learning math (if the recipe calls for 1/8 tsp of something, and we’re doubling the recipe, how many tsps. do we need ?). He’s a neat guys, and obviously, pretty tolerant ! Its fun to watch him grow and get it! The program is a great opportunity for kids from all walks of life to get a greater opportunity because for some reason an adult mentor isn’t there for them. We’re not parents, but we’re friends who are adults. Even just that little attention can make a tremendous difference for a kid. Here’s where I need to ask you for money. The program requires significant background checks for volunteers, and provides professional support to the kids, parents and checks in with the volunteers on a regular basis to make sure everything is OK. As you can imagine, pairing up adults with kids can be fraught with issues. We work very, very hard to make sure that doesn’t happen – and when there is even a hint of an issue, we make sure to take immediate action. To do that, we have to pay the professionals who work for us, and we have to pay for all the background checks, interview time and overall program support. Your donations go directly to the program – we pay a minimal fee to National for their support and program guidance, but other than that, all the money goes directly to support our efforts with kids. (I invite you to come on down to the office to see for yourself we don’t spend much on rent !). We currently serve about 250 kids in Helena, and 200 kids in Great Falls. We need your help to continue. Because we’re kid oriented – a lot of our fundraising is fun! This year’s Bowl For Kids Sake theme is the SuperHero Bowl. We’re not superheros, and we’re not good bowlers – we’re skiers. Please click on this link to make a contribution to the Nose-Burrow Ski Team SuperHero Bowling Team. Every dollar makes a difference, and your donation goes directly to the program, and Makes a Difference in the life and opportunity for a kid. Thank you for your consideration! Bon Ski !
